The best way to clean your jewellery

Wearing your Louise Jean pieces every day, as intended, can lead to dirt accumulation, that’s just life. Since much of the jewellery we wear has sentimental value, it’s worth putting in a little time and effort to maintain its sparkle. Cleaning from time to time will remove the buildup of oil and dirt and will keep it looking as good as the day you got it. So how can you keep your Louise Jean jewellery looking its very best? Here are some tips to keep your jewellery sparkling.

The first step is preventative maintenance. Making sure your jewellery fits perfectly helps to avoid any unnecessary handling. When jewellery is handled, the oils from your fingers adhere to the surface and affect its appearance. If you feel your ring is spinning and moving Louise Jean can help make sure your ring is the correct size. Showering with your ring, applying creams and tanning lotions or washing hands frequently create a film on your jewellery. This also goes for applying makeup with your fingers while your ring is on, cooking, etc. Essentially anything touching the ring can add to the dirt. Thankfully removing dirt buildup is simple and can easily be done at home with a few simple items you probably have laying around the house. A simple plan to keep your jewellery looking beautiful is to soak it in a mild degreasing solution, once or twice a week.

What you will need:

  • 1 tsp of mild dishwashing liquid
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • Bowl or shallow dish
  • Soft bristle toothbrush or soft cloth

  1. Mix the mild dishwashing liquid into a cup of warm water until fully dissolved.
  2. Soak the jewellery in the solution for 2-3 minutes.
  3. If you’re working over a sink, make sure to close the drain.
  4. Use a soft cloth or soft bristle toothbrush to scrub clean hard-to-reach places gently.
  5. Rinse with clean water and lay to dry or clean with a soft cloth.

What you will need:
  • 1 cup warm-hot water
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • Aluminum foil
  • Small bowl or shallow dish
  1. Line a bowl or shallow dish with aluminum foil and add your jewellery.
  2. Mix the boiling water, salt, and  baking soda together and pour into your lined dish.
  3. Slowly add ½ cup white vinegar.
  4. Watch as the baking soda and vinegar react and bubble up, this is when most of the cleaning happens.
  5. Allow the jewellery to soak for 5-10 minutes, stirring once or twice to move jewelry around if need be.
  6. Rinse jewelry and lay to dry on a paper towel or soft cloth.
Avoid using abrasives household cleansers or toothpaste. Chemicals like chlorine and bleach can damage some of the metals used to alloy gold and abrasives can scratch gold and other metals. Please note these methods have been tested on diamond and gold. Happy cleaning!
