Size Guide

Use an existing ring that fits on the ring finger

Measure the internal diameter (mm) of the ring

We strongly recommend having your ring size professionally measured for the most accurate fit. Ring sizing is a personal preference. Rings should have some resistance going over the knuckle and feel snug but comfortable at the base of your finger.

Size will fluctuate with factors such as climate and hydration. Measure your finger at different times to get an average. Band thickness also impacts fit. Wider bands and stacked rings will likely require sizing up.

Diamond Shape

In jewellery, stone shape refers to the physical form or outline of the diamond or gemstone, which impacts its overall appearance and style. Often confused with cut, common shapes include oval, round, emerald, cushion, and more. Each shape highlights different aspects of the gemstone's hue, brilliance and fire. When selecting a gemstone, consider personal style and how the stone's shape will complement the setting and overall design of the piece.

Diamond Size

Carat (ct) is the unit of weight used to measure diamonds and gemstones, and is primarily what influences their value. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger carat weights typically indicate larger stones, however, the size can depend on the stone’s shape, cut, and the relative density of the gemstone.

Carat Total Weight (cttw) refers to the combined weight of all diamonds or gemstones in a piece of jewellery. For multi-stone designs, this figure gives the total weight of all stones, not the weight of any individual one.

Diamond Colour

Colour in a diamond is a natural phenomenon caused by trace elements during its growth. The D to Z scale is the industry’s most widely used grading system, evaluating diamonds based on their colour.

Subtle colour differences can impact a diamond’s value, even between stones of the same carat and clarity, though distinctions are often unnoticed by the untrained eye between D and G.

Colour Scale

Band Width

Band width refers to the width of the ring’s shank, which is different from its height. Most LOUISE JEAN engagement rings have widths ranging from 1.6mm to 2.5mm

While custom widths are available, there are minimum width requirements to ensure structural durability, based on factors like design, ring size, and stone size.

Our team is happy to assist with any inquiries about band widths and can help ensure visual balance and proportionality for your design.

Learn More

Unisex Band Width

Our classic, unisex wedding band designs are available in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 7mm widths. This applies to our Classic Ring, Cuff Ring, and Knife Edge Ring.

Typically, 3-5mm is most common for female rings, while 4-6mm is most common for male rings.

Keep in mind that the wider the band, the tighter it will feel on your finger. As the width increases, you may need to increase the ring size for a more comfortable fit.

Diamond Clarity

During the diamond growth process, internal impurities called inclusions are formed. Clarity grading evaluates their type, position, and visibility, ranging from Flawless (F) to I3.

Aiming to select diamonds that are eye-clean, with inclusions too tiny to be seen without magnification, provides the best balance of value and quality.

Clarity doesn't affect brilliance or sparkle, and as long as a diamond is eye-clean, clarity gradings are indistinguishable to the naked eye.

Diamond Cut

The cut of a diamond refers to the facet arrangement, which impacts its light performance, fire, brilliance, and overall beauty. Cut is one of the most important yet misunderstood aspects of a diamond. Cut is graded by measuring angles and facet sizes. Inferior cuts can cause light leakage or dark zones, resulting in a dull diamond or severe bowtie.

Only round diamonds have a specific cut grading on their certificate, as they follow standardised guidelines for proportions. All other diamonds, known as fancy shapes, do not have a universal cut grading but may have their polish or symmetry assessed. Cut grading can only truly be assessed by inspecting the diamond itself, not the certification.

Diamond Dimensions

All diamonds, regardless of shape or carat, have unique dimensions. This refers to the length, width, and depth of each stone, measured in millimeters. Two diamonds of the same shape and carat weight can look very different to the eye due to variations in their proportions. Dimensions affect not only the diamond's size and visual appearance, but can impact their cut quality and sparkle.

CTTW

CTTW (Carat Total Weight) refers to the combined weight of all diamonds in a piece of jewelry, not just a single stone. This measurement includes the center stone and any accent or side diamonds, giving a complete picture of the diamond weight featured in the item.

Accent Diamonds

Accent diamonds are smaller stones that surround or complement the center diamond. While they’re not the main focus, they enhance the overall brilliance, design, and sparkle of the jewelry piece. These diamonds are often used in the band, halo, or side settings.

Diamond Finish

Diamond Finish sample content

Metal Finish

Finish refers to the surface texture of a ring. We offer two finishes for our unisex ring designs.

High Polish
A sleek, shiny finish that creates a smooth, reflective surface, offering a timeless and elegant appearance.

Brushed Finish
A soft, matte finish with fine linear texture, achieved by hand-brushing the surface for a subtle and modern effect.

Both finishes can be applied to all metal colours and karats. It's important to note that both metal finishes may show wear over time and will require re-finishing to maintain their appearance.

Diamond Certificate

Diamond certification is a process in which a gemological laboratory assesses a diamond’s key attributes, including cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Certification provides an unbiased, detailed report about the diamond's quality, which in turn influences value.

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) are two leading certifiers, known for their rigorous grading standards and independent assessments, ensuring transparency in diamond purchases.

Pavé Band

Pavé (pronounced "pah-vay") is a French term meaning “paved”. Pavé designs can vary in stone sizes and widths. Different pavé techniques, such as variations in the number and shapes of claws, can change the visual effect of the stones or designs.

1/2 Pave

A 1/2 pavé band features stones set halfway around the ring.

3/4 Pave

A 3/4 pavé band has stones set three-quarters of the way around the ring.

The number of stones set will vary depending on the ring size. If you're concerned about your rings spinning, a 3/4 band offers more coverage. We do not offer full pavé bands, as stones on the inside of the hand are more prone to damage.

Bracelet Size

Bracelet Length

Chain bracelet sizing is based on total length (circumference).

To measure your wrist, use a flexible tape or string to find the length that fits comfortably, but isn’t too loose. Our chain bracelets have adjustable lengths.

Tennis bracelets fit at one length, designed to be flexible and allow movement. Worn slightly lower on the wrist, they may relax and stretch over time. If you're between sizes, consider sizing down.

For custom sizing enquiries, contact us.

Bangle Size

Bangle sizes refer to the internal diameter, including both length and width for oval-shaped bangles. Our bangles do not have hinges.

When selecting a size consider the fit both over your hand and when on your wrist. To determine your size, tuck your thumb in and measure the widest point of your hand across the knuckles.

Oval bangles sit closer to the wrist, while round bangles will have more movement. Bangles cannot be resized, so view our sizing tips here. (Guide to come).

Chain (Necklace Size)

Length

The necklace length depends on personal style, and sizing varies for each person. Our chains begin from 40cm, which typically rests at the base of the neck or just above the collarbone.

Finer chains will more closely follow the contours of your décolletage, while heavier chains or pendants will hang straighter and longer.

Visit us to try on various lengths, or use a measured piece of string to find your perfect fit. For custom sizing advice, contact us.

Carat

Carat refers to the weight of a gemstone, not its size. A higher carat typically means a heavier and often larger-looking stone. (This is a sample description.)

Band Profile

Band profile refers to the shape of the ring’s band, known as the shank. Profile affects visual appearance, comfort, and stackability with other rings. We carefully design each profile to ensure both beauty and durability. While most rings come with a standard half-round band profile, some designs allow customisable profile options to better suit your personal style.

Claw Options

Round Solitaire Designs
Solitaire designs with round diamond centre stones may feature your choice of either four or six talon shaped claws. This is a personal aesthetic preference, with little bearing on structure.

Orientation

Orientation refers to the angle at which the stones, often the centre stone, are set. We invite you to customise the orientation of the focal stone to create a unique design. While the most common setting is portrait (north-south), other popular options include east-west, a compass orientation, or even a custom angle. The orientation affects the appearance of the diamond shape, and can also change the way the ring sits and covers the finger.

Portrait

The most common choice in ring settings, stones are set vertically, with a portrait orientation (north-south)

East-West

For visual appeal and increased finger coverage, elongated stone shapes can be set horizontally in an east-west orientation. Available in most setting styles, including trilogies on request.

Diamond Ratio

The ratio of a diamond refers to the proportion of its length compared to its width, calculated by dividing length by width. A lower ratio results in a more plump, rounded stone, while a higher ratio gives a more elongated, slender appearance.

The ratio significantly impacts the visual appeal of a diamond and is a matter of personal preference. Square and round diamonds typically have a ratio of 1.0, while other shapes vary, with some ratios being more common than others.

Hidden Gemstones

A hidden gem is a personalised touch that can be added to any ring, engagement or wedding. Available in coloured diamonds, gemstones, and many birthstones, up to 3 inlay gems can be included. Flush set on the inside of the band, they are typically positioned on the side of the shank, to the side of any stones or settings.

Most rings feature 1.2mm stones, wider or unisex rings with a band width of 3mm+ feature 1.5mm stones.

Inlay gems can also be placed on the outer surface of our Classic Ring, Cuff Ring, and Signet designs. Please leave a note at checkout with your preferred gem placement, and we will endeavour to accommodate your request while ensuring the structural integrity and durability of the piece. Our team will reach out to confirm the placement of gems before proceeding with production.
